Prominences on Late Type Active Stars
نویسنده
چکیده
There is increasing evidence of prominence-like neutral hydrogen clouds suspended in the otherwise hot coronae of active late-type stars. We review this evidence here and discuss the nature of these clouds. In particular we discuss their possible role in rotational braking.

Orbiting Clouds of Material at the Keplerian Co-rotation Radius of Rapidly Rotating Low-mass WTTs in Upper Sco
Using K2 data, we have identified 23 very low mass members of the ρ Oph and Upper Scorpius star-forming region as having periodic photometric variability not easily explained by well-established physical mechanisms such as star spots, eclipsing binaries, or pulsation. All of these unusual stars are mid-to-late M dwarfs without evidence of active accretion, and with photometric periods generally...
متن کاملSlingshot prominences above stellar X-ray coronae
We present a new model for the coronal structure of rapidly rotating solar-type stars. The presence of prominences trapped in co-rotation 2 to 5 stellar radii above the stellar surface has been taken as evidence that the coronae of these stars must be very extended. The observed surface magnetic fields, however, cannot contain Xray emitting gas out to these distances. We present an alternative ...
متن کاملNonaxisymmetric magnetic field generation in rapidly rotating late-type stars
Abstract. Recently the discovery of the “flip-flop” phenomenon, by which a predominant “active” longitude jumps by about 180◦, on several rapidly rotating late-type stars has directed attention to the issues surrounding the presence of large-scale nonaxisymmetric magnetic fields in these objects. Here we study nonlinear mean field dynamo models with quasi-cylindrical rotation laws, acting in sp...
متن کاملEvidence for a New Class of Extreme UV Sources
Most of the sources detected in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV; 100 Å to 600 Å) by the Rosat/WFC and EUVE all-sky surveys have been identified with active late-type stars and hot white dwarfs that are near enough to escape absorption by interstellar gas. However, about 15% of EUV sources are as of yet unidentified with any optical counterparts. We examine whether the unidentified EUV sources may ...
متن کاملThe coronal structure of Speedy Mic - II : Prominence masses and off - disc emission
Observations of stellar prominences on young rapidly rotating stars provide unique probes of their magnetic fields out to many stellar radii. We compare two independently obtained datasets of the K3 dwarf Speedy Mic (BO Mic, HD 197890) using the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT) and the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT). Taken more than a fortnight apart they provide the first insight into the evol...
